Be Responsible - Be Universal is more than just a slogan; it lies at the core of our philosophy and is the mantra underlying each and every one of the decisions we take. We provide memorable experiences, based on responsible and green tourism that has a positive impact, while seeking to minimise our environmental footprint and ensuring that each destination is a safe and friendly space for all.
As part of our journey towards sustainability, we are championing a circular economy in which hotels are more caring. Our aim is to add value to society by creating environments that promote wellbeing and equal opportunities through ethical leadership practices that allow us to spread the message of sustainability at all levels.
Learn about the progress we’ve made:
In recent years, we have obtained the Double U Certificate for circularity. What’s more, the Universal Hotel Marqués and the Universal Hotel Laguna hold ISO 14001:2015 certification.
We use technology to save energy, installing photovoltaic panels at several of the chain’s properties.
We have eliminated all single-use plastics from our operations, and introduced refillable amenities by the Mallorcan brand Tot Herba. Our hotels also have filtered water stations where all our guests can refill their bottles.
We work with local suppliers and devise menu rotation plans that prevent food waste and promote the circular economy.
We are the principal promoters of Cleanwave’s MedGardens marine reforestation project, based in the Sant Elm area.
We support labour insertion and equal opportunities, working with foundations such as Cáritas and Deixalles. Internationally, we are part of Unicef’s “Hoteles Amigos” initiative, which promotes access to drinking water for children living in third-world countries
Sport is one of our drivers, and in this sense, we are the title sponsor for the Universal Mallorca Marathon held in Colonia de Sant Jordi and also collaborate with the Paguera Challenge.
• To achieve Net Zero emissions in our hotel operations.
• To promote circularity at all our hotels, in line with the 9R strategy.
• To reduce the direct water footprint of our hotels by 20%.
• To introduce a training and career plan that will integrate on the job market young people with varying levels of education.
• To encourage equal opportunities through the introduction of an equality plan and the inclusion of inclusive recruitment criteria in our operations.
• To provide support for vulnerable groups and education centres through the signing of collaboration agreements with social entities.
• To introduce digitalisation, applying technological data and tools to environmental and social management in order to advance our sustainability strategy.
• To promote a culture of sustainability through a two-way communication plan that embraces all our stakeholders.
• To create a collaborative network of suppliers committed to sustainability.
These documents underpin our commitment to transparency and reflect our progress in key areas such as reducing our carbon footprint, the responsible consumption of resources and waste management. In addition, all our actions are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and our 2030 Strategy.
In 2023, we carried out a full-scale renovation of our flagship property, the Universal Hotel Aquamarin, with a strong focus on sustainability at every level. The premises behind this process included extending the opening season, reducing the number of rooms and making the hotel more efficient. In this sense, we installed photovoltaic panels, improved the building’s thermal envelope and replaced the least efficient lights with LED lighting.
Thanks to this project, we received the 2023 Re Think Hotel award
It must be stressed that many of these improvements were possible thanks to Next Generation Funds. This subsidy also enabled us to install photovoltaic facilities in the following hotels: the Adults-Only Universal Hotel Cabo Blanco, Universal Aparthotel Don Camilo (Aquavilla annex), Universal Hotel Castell Royal and Universal Grand León & Spa.
